Default Equis timing light compatible?

Hey all. I'm in need of a timing light. Looking at this one on amazon, it's an Equus 5568 pro, it's $100.00. Has good reviews overall, and since I don't have a tach, it'd be a nice feature to have. Also shows dwell, which is nice, because I currently have points. Anyway a couple of the reviews said its not compatible with an aftermarket msd or Mallory distributor. Which I was planning on eventually getting. Also someone said it doesn't read 8mm cables very good. Which I have. Any thoughts?

I've got the 3568 and it works perfect with my Ford Motorsport 9mm wires, MSD 6A and Pertronix I ignition. I sniped mine on eBay for $35 shipped.

Personally, I can't recommend it. First one was DOA, replaced free no problem. Second worked only a short time. Third is still working. As most multi-function items, can be a pain to operate till functions are memorized. Too many cords to keep out of the fan limiting movement. I have ran across some systems it will not work on. Digital displays are nice, but constant changing of readings is aggravating reading voltage, rpm and dwell.

I've had the same cheap timing light for 30 years. Same with my tach/dwell meter. I almost NEVER buy fancy ***** because, as Murphy would have it, something will fail requiring me to buy ANOTHER piece of fancy *****. Buy a relatively inexpensive light with a spark advance function like
this one this one
, and a DMM with tach and dwell function like
this one this one
, and you'll have greater capability and less investment.

A bit off topic, but I recently learned to time these older cars using a vacuum gauge. Change timing to max vacuum, back off 1.5 inhg. It allows the motor tell you what is optimal for all the variables with the motor. My car has never run better.

Thanx guys. wife gave me $200 4 my bday. At 1st thought id get a set of pulleys, but the more I thought about it, figured the smart thing 2 do is buy some much needed tools & lighting 4 the garage. So lookn at timing light, vac gauge, dwell meter, & tap n die set. Along with 8000 other things lol
