Default Change of plans engine-wise

A good friend called me today and offered me a 289 he has in an old Scout FREE OF CHARGE... Said the last time he ran it it ran like a top... Looks like I'm in the market for a 9" rearend and 5 lug spindles...

What about the trans you were going to rebuild. Will that work with it?

As far as I know a C4 will work fine with a 289. But it does beg the question... Should I go with a T5

That c4 should be fine. I had one in my 66 with a 302 and had no problems. I also have one in my 68 with a 289

Guess it will all depend on whether I want a manual or auto...

Will I need to change the bell housing on the C4 for a 289?

Oh, and here I thought you might hang in there with the six,
everybody has a V8 be different!

Kidding aside sounds like a good deal for you, besides if you leave
the six in people will give you a tough time and say you should put in a V8

Yes, you will need a bellhousing for a V8, check first and see if the 289
has 5 bolt or 6 bolt for the bellhousing so you can get the correct one.

I believe the C4 289 version had extra clutches in it compared to the I-6
version so while you are rebuilding it you can upgrade it.

The torque converter is also different for a V8

+1, sorry.

Plenty of c4 trannies holding up to stout small blocks, and 8 inch rear ends too. Don't think you have to have a nine if you can find a deal for an 8. I actually have a cut down 9 sitting next to the car but will prolly not ever use it.

Theres a BW T-10 for sale in the classified for $300 which is a great price- I believe he also has a bellhousing for sale as well. I would get an eight inch rear end- there cheaper and easier to find and plenty strong enough for most applications. John

Default V/8 Conversion

Changing an I6 to a V8 will involve a lot more than your transmission. The rear end will need to be changed, 5-lug wheels front and back, front end changes as well. You might want to sit down and list out all the mods required before you get started.
