I helped a friend pull one out of a junkyard car about 20 years ago. The long shaft can make it interesting. All you should need to do is pop the joint at the pitman arm, remove the bolts the hold the box to the frame, remove the steering wheel, and slide it out. If there is not enough clearance under the car the slide the shaft all the way, you can lower the steering column by removing the 2 nuts under the dash that hold the retainer in place. By lowering the column, you'll be able to pull the box in more of a straight line through the firewall. If you need even more clearance, disconnect the turn signal switch wiring and pull the steering column out completely - then you'll get lots of room for the shaft.

I've removed it from the bottom and the top and find the top removal easier. Plan on removing the outer column, driver's seat and export brace. It's a fiddly wiggly job but not bad.
I took a complete power steering system out of a 65 coupe in a junkyard years ago. I'd rather not say how I got it out, it wasn't pretty. The motor was moved and the dash was no longer a dash shaped assembly anymore. I was young and inexperienced then. LOL

+1 on coming out the top. I removed the exhaust manifold and clutch linkage on mine to get enough room. Had a helper in the car guide the shaft while I pulled the box. It looks worse than it is.

When I removed mine the car was up on jack stands/car ramps with no motor in it and brought it out the bottom without a problem. I just removed the bolts holding the steering box to frame and took it out in one piece. Im sure with no obstructions it made it easier.
