This makes me laugh.... not because my Mustang is not shiny, does not have the original interior, or the fact that it is running an, ahem, Chevrolet style hood... no not really about my Mustang at all... It make me laugh because of a funny little story a couple of months back....
I've got several car projects that I'm working on, and this is about my '38 Chev "gasser style" hot rod truck that I took to a show in late September....
I was asked to bring this truck (if I could get it completed) to help a local Charity event have some cars at its first car show. I am a member of our local Masons fraternity, and we have put on an annual car show the last (2) years that has been very successful.... I'm one of the (2) founding members of the show, and we work hard to put on a good event...
Anyway, I was approched to bring my Mustang to this other show, and like I said if I could get my truck done, to bring it. I had been working all year on the truck and was in the process of wiring it the week before this show which was on a Saturday morning....Friday night I'm still wiring it all up, the motor (which was built back in the early '70s for the strip) had not been fired in over 30 years (I did go through it last winter as a precaution) so I had a long way to go from 7pm at night to 9am the following morning......I had no idea if it would drive straight, or go straight into a ditch....
At about 10 pm my buddy shows up (who also builds hot rods) to give me moral support on the "first fire up".... he brings a case of beer....along with his gearhead son, and my own gearhead son, the (4) of us set to work on this truck..
At about midnight the wiring is complete, lights work, etc. We go to fire the engine and have various issues (leaking coolant, no spark, etc) we get the thing fired at about 2am... tune the engine best as we can and take it on it's maiden voyage to fill the tank at about 3am.....my buddy goes home to sleep, I work until 5am fixing wires, etc...get to bed about 5:30 get up about 8am and do a couple of shakedown runs with the truck, more tuning and head out to this show about 25 miles out... truck runs great... but it is not painted, no grill, but looks ok with no rust or anything.
I get to the show, lots of thumbs up as I pull in (front end high, fenderwell headers, nice sounding engine)....I go through the grounds and have to park at the far end as the lot is already full......I pull into a spot next to a Corvair Ramp Pickup owned by an older gentelman maybe 60 or 65, and shut off the engine, and just as I get out of the truck and walk around the back he says in his superior voice from his lawn chair, loud enough for everyone in a 15' circle to hear.. "You ruined that truck"...I was taken by surprize and said "Excuse me?".. and he came back with "you ruined that truck"....I was dumbfonded, an by the look of some of the people nearby, they were too....
After I explained to him that I've owned this truck for more than 30 years, he seemed to soften his tone....I got in the truck and moved it to the other end of the grounds closer to the guys who helped me the night before.........
All my wife said when she heard of this was "How Rude" ....and know what I'm like without sleep.. she asked "Is he still breathing?".....LOL...
Anyway, you have to let the stupid comments from stupid people roll off your back... not everyone like the same things, if we did, how boring would it be?
WOW..... sorry so long winded....

I had a "experience" with someone this weekend as well. There was a show that I went to with a friend of mine. He has an '87 Buick Grand National that is his daily driver basically all stock. Well there was a guy there that has a coupe(I cant remember the year off the top of my head I think it was a 67), but he put an LS1 in it. Not my cup of tea but its your car and you can do what you please with it.
Anyway he came up to my friend and I, and started talking about my friends GN. He asked what it put down and if he could beat the other cars there. My friend told he he gets 263hp/330lbstq not a beast but has some getup and its his daily driver. Well this guy got all snobby and was like "That's it! I get 350hp out of my LS1. I guess those cars aren't as quick as they seem." Then he proceeded to say how he was trying to race the 2013 Shelby next to him but the driver wouldn't bite, and that he could easily take him.
If that user is on here I'm sorry you had to read this but we feel you where pretty rude. It must be some of that Chevy motor rubbing off on him.
Another good reason to avoid the car shows. A good cruise night now and again is better time spent. I'd rather be behind the wheel for the most part. BTW I love coupes, so long as it's not a 71-73.........yuuuuk.
Hey, I loved my '71 coupe when I was 18....
Built 429, built C6, and 4:30 gears.
I could broil the tires off the thing at 35-40 MPH in drive.
The guy I got it from detuned it down to the low 13's before I bought it because he didn't want me killing myself.
I'd love to build a replica of this car some day.

Mine is a vert and I love it but it is a T Code vert converted to an 8. I wouldn't want to swap it but it will have the T code stigma. Do I care any more? No. I posted a thread on this forum and it was pointed out to me that any Mustang is a better Mustang than no Mustang at all. If a thing is what you want and it is all you want then it is all you need and it will most likely always be a lot more than someone else in the world has. Just keep smiling and enjoy the ride.
My first experience with this happened while I was with a girlfriend walking into a grocery store after we parked my all original 74 Stingray. I was 22 or 23 and some 40ish A$$clown walking out of the store asked what year it was. This was a common question so I told him and he instantly says "you really ought to pull those emblems off since it's not a real stingray." I politely told him it was actually an all original car and that they kept the stingray name through '76. His wife/gf was embarrassed enough for all of us.
He walked away mumbling something's about me being dumb kid and climbed into his vehicle. We walked slow because the slanted spaces meant he had to pass us on the way out. He had his window down as he rolled by and I let him know what a sweet '89 long bed Ford Ranger he had.
I learned right then an there how people can be about cars. The fact is I would rather own some more than others but they're all cool.
I have a 65 coupe that I bought when I was 15 because I loved the trans-am style cars from back then. Lot of these guys that think coupes are worthless don't even know that the racing heritage of the Mustang started with the coupe. It was lighter, that's part of the appeal to me plus the looks.
I also own a 70 Mach and can add another version to this story of people saying crazy things at shows. My buddy owns a 72 Mach and along with mine they are both automatic cars. I get it a lot but one guy this summer basically flat out told us it is to bad you have these nice cars and they aren't stick shift? What do you say to that? You cant really argue with stupid.

o "Ditch those rims" or some other comment that's volunteered but not asked for!
o Nice car whadja pay for it?
IMO the person who thinks something dumb just doesn't know, so what? I know people in the first two catagories that can't help it...it's automatic.
Wadja pay for your house, your roof replacement, lawnmower whatever...it's like wadja pay is programmed!
You should have a concrete driveway. Little do they know, if they would bother looking I don't like concrete. I have brick sidewalk, imitation stone patio, and asphalt drive (the asphalt warms from the sun and collects less ice and snow.

Whoa, unbelievable... I would have asked for his man card right then and there, and torn it up!
What do you say to those people that know everything? Some people/purists feel they have to exert their extensive knowledge out loud for the world to hear and point out all the flaws, or in-correct part numbers and personal opinions when they are most often than not never asked for it, be it correct or incorrect statements. Like someone said earlier, social skills severely lacking, and missing the point of the general love for the hobby, be it concours, survivor, or restomod. Ethics and manners are getting as rare as our rides these days, and a general resentment for what others have, and have achieved, seems to be growing. Kinda sad. I like the idea of the casual cruise nights/get togethers over the roasting in the lawn chair waiting for validation point that was referenced earlier by others too. Personally, my first car was a 66 coupe with a 289, and although I do not regret selling it to buy my house, I do miss it, and the memories I had with that car. That coupe defined my love for Mustangs and classics. This was 20 years ago now, but I always got waves from others, thumbs up, lengthy friendly conversations at gas stations etc and never heard the car show comments that some are experiencing. Guess I needed to participate in one to get those!? Only the bow tie guys ripped on it simply for being a Mustang. Never a coupe comment from them though. I'm thinking it comes more commonly from the Mustang crowd, or those that had one, or had the uncle that had a friend that had one etc. and that it is becoming more of a common occurrence? Can't wait to get back in the game with my new project, and for the ripping I will get for cutting up my rust free S code once it hits the road. This thread has prepared me with some great and witty comeback lines! Thanks!! Cheers all.
I had a similar situation. Was speaking to a guy at a show about my 68 Coupe and the modifications I did to the engine, the new wheels I ordered, and he told me "I wish I could do those things to my Cobrajet, but mine is not like yours, as mine has a certain level of prestige"
Smiled nodded and told him "ye, yours looks better showing the age it is"

He may have been referring to the salt on the road hitting unpainted steel as ruining the truck with possible rust? No doubt you took all that into consideration when you finally painted it. Any how it was rude of him to broadcast his opinion if your welfare was his primary concern. Sounds like your truck is nice and vintage as well? What sort of car did your neighbor have? There are lots of people who are clever at knocking what everyone else has but don't chirp up too well when you ask what they own.
