Default Another wire without a home

Check out the pic. Anyone want to guess what this wire is supposed to be for? It is a solid yellow wire that has a black female bullet connector on the end of it. It terminates right at the solenoid.

Check it out:

Thanks!

I have a wiring diagram for a 67 & 68, according to the wiring diagram I have, it connects on the battery side of the slyinod & goes to the A on the voltage regulator.

Looks like it is 654 and needs to tie into the other yellows on the power post of the solenoid. The yellow and red are for the ammeter.

Assuming this is the 68.

Battery side of starter solenoid. It's the voltage reference to your regulator A+ terminal.

Steve: On the very end of the headlight harness, that terminates at the starter solinoid, you will find the answer to you question. You will find a yellow wire. with a male connector that plugs into that wire.

Thanks for checking Leon. I'm working on a 1965 Mustang with a 289 which I have converted to 1966-style instrument cluster.

Thanks, I've got a 1965 with a 289. I checked out a 1968 with a 289 and I saw the yellow wire going to the solenoid, but I figured 1968 is too different from 1965 to trust.

Thanks John, I will look for the wire of which you speak. Hopefully it isn't already connected to something else!

The 654 wire to the ammeter is also on the 66. If you are converting the 65 to 66 gauges you may need to replace the alternator harness as well (if you have not already).

It definitely looks like the ammeter wire as it is in the harness with the ignition, start and the other ammeter wire. That circuit wasn't present on the standard 65 harness.

John, Looks like I have an issue. I have the 1966 V8 gauge feed harness and the 1965 (with gauges) headlamp harness. I looked at the 1966 headlamp harness and it does have the yellow wire. Unfortunately the 1965 headlamp harness (with gauges) does not.

I suppose my best option is to swap out the 1965 headlamp harness for the 1966 harness. What do you think?

Thanks,

Thanks Frank. Looks like I have a 1966 gauge feed harness and I got a 1965 headlamp feed (with gauges) harness. I will need to get a 1966 headlamp harness as it has the other end of the yellow wire.

Do you think I will also need a 1966 alternator harness too? I purchased the 1965 alternator with gauge harness.

Thanks

I don't have a wiring diagram that shows the 65 headlamp wiring harness with gauges but I would ASSUME (and we know where that gets you) it is the same as the 66 and all you would have to do is replace the alternator harness. You are just missing the splice point that ties into the 654 wire. As far as I know, the only difference between the 65GT and 66 gauge clusters was that the ammeter had an inductive loop in 65 and had posts on the back in 66.

Also, the underdash harness is different 65 (with idiot lights) to 66/ Again, I'm not sure about the 65GT with gauges.

I also know that I burnt up my alternator harness twice when I converted to the 66 gauges until I figured out the difference. But that was 6 years ago and I have an old brain so I need to revisit it to be sure!

If I get a chance this morning I will try to look into it.

Here's a good starting point.

Installing 66 Gages in a 65
