I'd stick with the original "impaler" column just because it's so hard to change over to a slip shaft/rag joint column. Ask me how I know.

In '67 (at least late if not all) it's my understanding the 390 GT's got the rag joint from factory, my 5/12/67 built 67 GT 390 does. I believe the books that show steering box #'s list it that way as well.

I swapped out my long shaft box for a short shaft box. It was not as hard to remove as it seems. comes out the top pretty easy. remove master cylinder, front seat, column support and all related bolts, brackets etc, steering wheel, an strut tower supports.
I used a 68 collapsible column so I had to change the wiring harness connector over to match my 67 wiring also.

I did similar to Madstang78 but had my original '67 gearbox rebuilt with a short shaft and coupler to install a '68 collapseable column also. Wiring was same colors for TS,etc., just had to splice in my '67 connector. Upper column of '68 is wider so you may need a spacer to make your steering wheel match up, just for visual.

I would go with the 68 year, For SAFTY reasons, It is a 2 part collapsible, the 67 is a straightshaft, does NOT give if you have a bad front end reck. The 68 year does.

That was the other addition to the collapseable column is retractable 3 pt. belts.

I wish I would have saved the pic I saw years ago on one of the forums of a '65/'66 that hit a bridge abutement and the steering column was pushed in and up into the drivers chest/face. The driver survived with broken jaw, sternum, etc. I'm sure he wished he had a collapseable column. The steering wheel was almost touching the roof and the rim was bent over where it hit the driver.
