Hi guys I'm suppose to go look at a car tomorrow and when I asked for the address he adds that "remember the registration is expired." Now he never mentioned that before. I asked him how long and he says he doesn't know. I mean how do you not know. So I figure something is fishy. Says he's selling it as is. I guess this is what you get with graigs list. So what do you all think?

...why would that matter? As far as I know, California is the only state that has weird registration statuses.
Why WOULD he mention that? It's a classic car. If it's a project, then it's expected that the registration is expired. Also, almost all classic cars are sold as is.
Nothing fishy here.
Edit: You're in California. Well then... I have no idea.

He said it like we talked about it. I think it's strange that he doesn't know how long. Yes the car is a project but it runs and drives looks great for $4900. How do I get it home 50 miles away and will I have to pay the late tags which could be years as far as I know.
As long as he has the title and its not a bad title and you can transfer it to you. Who cares. he just doesnt want to pay the registration and is letting you know (in a round about way) that you're going to be stuck with it. Most states (I believe) have a $ cap on how much they can charge you for not registering a car. In Missouri not register a car for 50years and $200 is all the state will beat you with.
As far as driving it home, keep bill of sale with you and you have 'x' days to get it registered. unless a cop has a hard-on for you, you cant be expected to get registration on a car you bought hours ago. My advice, keep pink slip handy and if you get pulled over you are 'in-transit'. write time and date on bill of sale
You can call the DMV and ask them to run the registration and check for back fees. If the car hasn't been registered in a long time then it may be out of the DMV's system. The DMV should help you out with re-registering the car and quote you how much it will cost you to re-register the car in your name. Also, they can issue you a temporary moving permit so you can drive the car. Personally, I'd visit your local AAA office that offers DMV services and take care all of the above and save a lot of time.
It should be fine if you're actually going to his house and buying it. You just want to follow up with the DMV sooner than later to get it registered in your name. They'll let you know if it's stolen. No one "sells stolen cars" and leaves a trail...so, like I said, if you're going to his house, I wouldn't be concerned. Get his ID.
A lot of people stop registering their cars if they don't use them and they're just sitting in their garage collecting dust. If it hasn't been registered in 8-years, they fall off the DMV unless they're reported stolen. If it's stolen, it never comes off the DMV records. You could actually buy a car with a Bill of Sale (basically a written agreement) here in California and then go register the car in your name without the title (as long as it isn't stolen though).
I forgot to mention that you can download and print Bill of Sale forms off the DMV website and take these forms with you when you go to look at the car, just in case the seller doesn't have a pink slip. You can have the seller complete his part of the form while you're there.
He says he has the pink slip. The big worry I have is he says he doesn't know how long it hasn't been expired. I mean hell what if it is stolen. What if he's trying to rob me?
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Call the DMV or AAA DMV services while you're looking at the car and have them run the registration. If it comes back stolen, then walk away and call the police. If it has late fees, then see if the seller will negotiate his asking price to account for the late fees. But if the seller has the pink slip and its in his name, then I'm fairly certain the car isn't stolen.
I wouldn't buy the car until you speak with DMV or AAA. The car may have parking violations on top of the registration fees. I believe California DMV can hold you responsible. If its just past due registration fees it shouldn't be that big of a deal. My 66 tags were four year behind when i perchased the car and my brother inlaw (PO) never registered it none operational. You'll just have to pay to make it current.

Hmmm… I've bought a bunch of Mustangs. One of them actually had current registration. The rest, not so much…

wow, california is so whack..i can see him having to pay the past due charges to reregister it, but not the next buyer...you dont have a buddy to take with you? He wants to sell the car, i think this is working in your favor. cash does talk..stick to trying to get it for the 4 g's. Do you already have car insurance on a car? if you are going to drive it home, call or email your co. to add the car. Good idea to print out a mva bill of sale. I would think the banks and the mva are closed today...me, i'm off to work. good luck, let us know how this turns out also have a backup plan in advance on who to call and how much for a tow if needed. if he wont budge and it doesnt seem all that great of a deal-walk away, then follow up this week end, maybe that will work..

No prob if you have a signed, clear title and a bill of sale with you.
