Default Shelby Drop - Now have Spring questions

So I did the Shelby drop. This moring I installed the UCA and installed the coil spring. It's the 620 Grab a track spring that I think is a lowering spring. I immediately notice, I can now install the spring without the use of a compression. It just slips in. This caused me to ask you some questions.

1. Is it normal after the Shelby drop to be able to install springs w/o a compressor?
2. If so, what holds the springs in place when I jack the front of the car up to change a tire? Does the shock serve this purpose?
3. Nether the spring perch nor the spring seat (at the top) hold the spring. Correct?
4. I have new spring insulators. The spring does not seat on the outside of the upper lip of the shock tower. It looks too tight. Is this normal? If not, is there a trick to forcing the insulator to slip over the metal lip?

Thanks

As long as the spring is centered in the top of the tower, it will seat when weight is applied. Normally, piece of wood between the arm and rail prevents full extension.

hey gta was thinking about doing the shelby drop also great questions.
ive heard of guys using a limit strap from the upper arm to the coil spring cover so the spring doesnt have a chance to move off the perch
what template did you use for the holes?
any chance if your not using it anymore that i may be able to borrw it?

Hi John, I purchased the metal template from Opentracker. PM me with your home address and I'll send it to you. Note: I have a 67. The 65/66 cars use a different drop template.

No compressor required when I relocated UCA's and installed Maier 600lbs springs.

I was able to squeeze mine in without using a compressor as well after the relocation. They were 1 inch drop springs.

FYI for others you can get the paper pattern off Glazier Nolan,s site. Or you can take a piece of body metal and make your own.

So with drop springs after a Shelby drop I shouldn't need a compressor? Is that the general consensus? Do anyone sell the premade bolt in compressor like mentioned on Daze-Cars info site?

My 1 inch drop springs went in with no compression and no shelby drop, so the drop would make it even easier. I'm about to do the drop on mine.

It's not the drop that makes it easier, it's the shorter springs. The drop moves the spring mount (perch) about 1/3".

Couple different folks on ebay sell the 'Daze Style' spring compressors. Definitely the tool to use if you really don't want to worry about being dazed by a flying spring.

I have the tommyzees spring compressor. Cannot say enough good things about it. You will never regret it purchasing it. Oh be sure to get the bearings that go with it, well worth the little extra.
