Hey guys, help the newb. What's this red idiot light mean? My floor mounted hi/lo beam doesn't work and I ordered a new one. I'm guessing this is the hi beam light. I also ordered a Haynes manual so don't jump my a$$! Lol
Also with the floor mounted hi beam is there a way to test it? Jump across it or check with volt meter? Thanks!

Yes that is your high beam indicator. Your switch must be stuck electrically at least in that position. Dont have schematic handy but yes you can bypass the switch with some jumpers to test the rest of the circuit.
If you disconnect the plug at the switch and install a jumper from the red-yellow wire to the red-black wire in the plug your low beams should be on and the hi beam indicator should be off.

You've already been helped out on the light but I would suggest getting yourself the 1965 Mustang Shop Manual instead of the Haynes/Chiltons offerings.
Since we are on the subject it appears the original 65-66 speedometers have a red plastic light lens and the reproductions are blue. Can anyone confirm this?

I have an original set with red, and an original set with blue. I don't know which if any (or both) of the sets of lenses are repro or original unfortunately.

I have an original and the high beam indicator is red on the standard gauge cluster (located on the left side). This is for an early 65 (October 64) build in Dearborn.

The '65 Shop Manual did not have wiring diagrams like the '66. In any case, buy the separate wiring diagram book. Diagrams are large and easy to read. I copied mine full size to use in the shop. Thus, I can use hi liters and colored pens etc. and lots of original grease on them.

Back in the old days...the 60s, most non expressway highways were one lane each direction. Leaving your headlights on high beam was blinding the opposing direction driver.
Thus the high beam indicator was a red warning light. We even had optional automatic headlight dimmers (GM one was Autronic Eye, had one on my 53 Olds).
Now days it's usually blue...just an indicator. So what if our high beam blinds the oncomming driver! Important things like engine temp merit a red warning!
