Default one piece rubber pan gasket question

What is the best way to seal a one piece oil pan gasket made from rubber? It is Ford Racing brand. Is any sealant used at all or what has worked for others here if using a sealant?

I think I just use a dab on the corners at the mains on both ends and glued it down with gasgacinch. Thats a contact cement that allows you to peel the gasket back off without heavy residue, its not so much for sealing as it is for holding it in the right spot.

FYI- if you are doing the R&R from the bottom, a tip for easy of install, lay the gasket on the pan, using sewing thread and in a round loop style, run the thread through the holes, this will ensure th gasket stays in alignment with the pan & engine holes, start the bolts, then remove the thread...you may have to cut it in a couple of places because of friction but it should just slip out when you are ready.

Where were you last week

I did mine from the bottom, and regular gasket tack wasn't strong enough to hold it in place very well.

OP, I didn't do the Permatex in the corners, as I've read both to do it, and that it's not necessary. I can't tell you yet whether or not it works, as I'm a few months from startup (only had to replace it because the oil pump shaft came out with the dizzy--grrr).

Is this the Felpro Permadry gasket, cause if so you don't use anything (thus the name). The Permadry gaskets come with the four studs that clip the gasket to the pan and thread into the bolt, making pan/gasket installation onto the block easy when laying on your back. Those studs alone are worth the price of the gasket!

no matter the gasket i always use permatex at the corners for piece of mind, most roll out the factory like that even with dry install rubber gaskets, and most recommend it.

I have the permadry gasket, it is amazing. The studs do rock. I kept them in case they stop putting them in the kits or something.

I have the one piece Perma Dry gasket. I put dabs of RTV in the corners of the mains.

I may try the one piece perma dry gasket as I cannot get my 4 piece gasket to stay leak free.

I used the one piece perma gasket on my oil pan. The engine was out of the car and on the stand at the time. I rotated the engine with the bottom facing up and I laid the gasket in the front and rear journal and it sat in perfect position. I then placed the oil pan on top of the gasket and tightened it down per the instruction. Once the engine was in the car and running the pan leaked real bad.

I ended up dropping the pan from under the car. I cleaned the gasket and used silicone on the front and rear of the pan and then installed the gasket on the pan. While it was setting up I placed silicone on the front and rear journals of the block/timing cover. I then reinstalled the pan and after I let it sit for 24 hours I poured oil back in and no leaks at all.

I highly recommend you use some type of sealant or you "may" being doing the job again. Would have made life easier for me if I just used sealant to begin with .

Another issue recently determined on here with the Permadry one-piece gaskets is the little tabs that tuck into the block at the front and rear seal corners. They tend to be too wide/thick and won't fully tuck into the holes, so leakage occurs at the ends due to this. I have this exact problem that I'll be fixing next spring. It could be that your silicone is masking this issue.

I had this problem with the 351w felpro one piece gasket. I replaced the felpro with a one piece Milodon 41004 gasket. It fit correctly. I still put a dab of silicone sealer in the rear tab areas. I will find out when I fire it up in the spring.

For those that encounter the issue, simply trim the tabs with a razor so that they fit better. I went through three gaskets and all were the same, and finally gave up. I found someone else here that had the issue and figured out the tab thing.

Ran the little monster yesterday. I no longer have any leaks! The Milodon one piece pan gasket fits correctly around the main caps. I recommend the Milodon one piece over the felpro one piece! Alan

The fel pro 1 piece gasket is def the way to go. The one on my 350 has been through 3 engine rebuilds, I just keep re using it, never leaked a drop. I, too put a dab of Rtv in the corners. Just installed one on my Windsor , same thing , no problems.
