Default My new AOD won't shift out of first

This just isn't my day. Finally got my aod conversion done, and towed the car up to get exhaust put on, but when I went to drive the car out of here it won't shift out of 1st gear, even manually. Reverse and 1st work fine, the rest, not so much. This is the first time I've tried to drive it with the new tranny. So...any ideas?

I checked the fluid level, it's good. I just set the TV cable by making sure there was constant pressure when the throttle moves, no slack. I know an incorrectly adjusted cable can make the tranny shift too soft, I don't know if that will make it not shift at all??

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I'm afraid I can't be much help, but the folks over at click click racing might be able to help. If you do a search on their forum, you may find your answer.

Governor stuck? Or a spool in the valve body? The AOD valve bodies are very sensitive to foreign material. B

Did you hook a pressure gauge up to the TV port on the passenger side to check and set the tv pressure? If not, you may have fired your new tranny.

You cannot properly set it by just taking the slack out. Following instruction below. I'm thinking something may be smoked already.

I only drove it down the street and back, maybe an 1/8th of a mile all together. I read several articles on this swap where guys said they set the TV cable without a gauge, and I followed their procedure, making sure the TV cable moved exactly in unison with the throttle and never had any slack, with a slight preload on the cable. Not saying that's the best way to do it, but I can't imagine it burned up the tranny that quick.

I've actually got those instructions, they came with my cable. Every thread I looked at said those instructions didn't work for them, and they ended up either having to take it to a shop, or they ended up setting it the way I mentioned.

if it never made it out of first you didnt burn it up already as was stated its most likely a hydraulic issue in the valve body.

is it newly rebuilt or used?

It was rebuilt, but it sat for about a year before I got around to installing it. Of course, I don't have a lot of faith in the shop that did the work after having dealt with them.

Been a long time since I played with an AOD, but I believe the easiest way to set the TV cable is to pin the throttle wide open, pin the trans lever all the way open, adjust the cable so there is no slack at full throw. Once the levers are released, there's usually a bit of slack at "idle". That should be good enough to get the car running so it can be adjusted by pressure.

That's exactly how I did it. I figured I'd drive it and see how it acted, then go from there.

Interested to see how this goes for you. I also had my AOD rebuilt (not cheap) but it has been over two years and I still havent started the car. I will be using the Lokar cable, Edebrock carb adapter, and the Summit geometry converter.

I used this to set my TV cable, pressure. Used the Lokar directions posted above.

Yes, using oil pressure at the TV port is the best way to do it. It's the middle plug on the passenger side toward the rear of the transmission. You want about 5psi at idle in either park or neutral. B

Turns out my throttle valve was stuck. I took the car out and gunned it real hard a few times at around 30mph and that unstuck it. The TV lever was moving just fine, but the stopper inside is what got stuck I guess. Apparently this is pretty common, I found a lot of guys with the same problem. The shifts are real soft, so I need to do some adjustment, but at least its shifting now.
