Default 1968 Steering wheel spring with grant wheel?

For those who have installed a Grant wheel on a 1968 column, did you retain the large spring? I assume it holds the bearing in the column by applying pressure.

If so, it just rubs against the back of the grant adaper (billet, if that matters)?

That is correct. The upper bushing needs to be held down by the spring.

No. That pressure spring disappeared when Ford switched to the rag joint column in 67.

Error, error. Confused!

I definitely pulled a spring out of there, but it had a 1967 steering wheel attached to a 1968 column. What holds the upper bearing in then?

Well this is somewhat of a mystery then! Where the heck was that giant spring in my steering wheel from? You say even 67 has no spring? So even my 67 steering wheel doesn't explain it?

...unless somebody has stuck a '67 long-shaft box and column in it......

Hmmm… Giant spring? The bearing spring is small. The only giant spring is for the horn ring on the standard wheel.

Oh? Let me take a picture of this thingy today (hopefully). Perhaps you can ID it. Maybe it came from there?

Although, maybe giant was the wrong word..

+1. That's the only big spring in there.

Confused

Here she is. It fits perfectly between the 1968 turn signal switch and column?

Do you have the installation instructions for the Grant wheel? If not, I believe you can download them from their website.

Yeah, no worries about that. Mainly concerned about what OEM pieces should be on the 68 column (I have a 67, so my shop manual has nothing on the 68),

and what orientation the turn signal switch should be when I install the wheel hub (the cancel nubs that stick up, and the locating pin. As in, what orientation should the locator pin be at before I press the hub down onto it).

Strange. That's a 64-67 bearing spring alright. Not used in 68.

The spring-loaded pin goes into the slot on the back of the steering wheel. Even if you miss on installation, the pin will find the slot.
