Default Question about additives....

What's everyone's thoughts on the additives for engine oil and fuel. I remember when I had my 68 camero I was told to add something to every gas fill up.....

Does the fuel additive really help with performance?

I have a 66 200 inline 6....

Thanks.

Fuel- I add 1 oz per gallon of Marvel Mystery Oil at each fill to ensure the fuel remains stabilized & keep the carb clean; I add 1 bottle of ZDDP to the oil at each oil change.

I also add about 1/3 of a bottle to my mod engines......when all this started several years ago I spoke to Ron Eskenderian directly (Isky Racing Cams) and this is what he advised.

Seafoam is a mineral oil-based solvent like Marvel Mystery Oil. Some different ingredients but same basic principle. I run MMO in the crankcase, 16oz at every oil change and nothing else, but I've got a roller cam. If I had a flat tappet I'd run a motor oil with a sufficient amount of Zinc/ZDDP, like Amsoil. I put StaBil in the fuel tank when filling up prior to storage.

Ok. So does it help or hurt to add the oxytane fuel additive for a Sunday driver?

I use Gunk to clean deposits from the oil at every oil change, and STP Oil Treatment. My DD has 175,000 miles and loses 1/2 quart every 3000 miles. I have always had such results. When I remove the valve covers on my 289HP for valve adjustment, that "200,000 mile since teardown" engine is as clean as a fresh build.

On the other hand, octane boosters and lead additives are a waste of money.

save your money-additives only benefit the seller of those products except if storing a vehile long term then a gas stabilizer. wes

Why do you want to put acne medicine in your gas tank?

Seriously, Oxytane is just as effective as putting acne medicine in your tank. It's makes the gas more expensive and nothing more.

These snake oil sales guys always make their "research" sound so convincing. I could argue how putting magnets on your fuel line will also improve the efficiency of your gas. I could explain how it "lines up the molecules" and all kinds of other nonsense. In the end, it's all bogus.

I agree that adding Sta-Bil is a good idea for a car that isn't driven regularly. As for oil additives, my take is the oil has everything it needs right in the bottle. That is, unless it's an oil that doesn't have ZDDP and I'm pouring into a car with a flat tappet cam. Then I make sure the oil has ZDDP and it's good to go.

There are those that say its all bogus, they have their opinion, I have mine.
I started 2 years ago using Seafoam in my oil, and about twice a season in the fuel tank. My cars engine is running so much better it is hard to believe. I have done
nothing else to it, I am not a real gearhead. I dont know or care what that stuff is
but it sure has made a difference in my car. My.02 worth.

To be clear, I never said Seafoam was bogus. It works well to clean fuel systems. I'm sure it works well to clean engines when added to oil as well. But if you change your oil regularly, you shouldn't need it. I definitely think it would be a good idea if you wanted to clean out an engine in a car you bought; being aware that it's possible it could create some oil leaks.

How can I tell that I have a flat tappet cam? I have a 200. Thanks.

If you have a 200 I6, it's an almost certainty that you have a flat tappet cam. While I'm sure somebody out there, somewhere, makes roller cams for an 1960s Ford I6, I would expect they're pretty rare and pretty pricey.

So, I think it's a very good idea to run a motor oil with ZDDP. Brad Penn and Valvoline Racing are two good examples. Brad Penn is very good oil. But it's expensive and hard to find. Valvoline Racing Oil is available at many auto parts stores and it's reasonably priced.

Alternately, you can run whatever oil is cheapest at Walmart and just pour in a bottle of ZZDP additive. But I'm pretty sure it's still more expensive this way.

I like 22GT's recommendation of using STP Oil Treatment. Seems fairly cost effective and readily available. Why use regular ZDDP over that? Is it that the STP Oil Treatment is not perceived to have enough ZDDP in it?
