Default Ideas on intake formy carbed 5.0 in my 67?

Hello all,
I know there are lots of opinions out there and have read the past posts. But, I have a different type of question.
I plan on leaving the engine stock (1990 mustang 5.0 GT), putting my 289 front timing chain cover on etc, so I can have that old fashion look. Even down to the distributor, hav e a pertronix. Anyway, the engine will have factory 5.0 heads. Planning on a stock crusier for now, not dumping much money into it. But, I do plan on AFR 165 or 185 heads, cam, intake down the road. So, what intake and cam do I buy now? I hate to put money into parts that I will use 3-4 years and then rebuild engine. Rebuilding now is out of question, so looking at Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, different cam and 600-650 holley carb. That way I can be good to go when I do upgrade the heads, etc.

Would this work or is it dumb?

Thanks for any help here-

If your going to rebuild it and add the aftermarket heads later don't bother with a cam now..The stock 5.0 cam can make some decent power anyway..

What bartl said. But I'd skip the blue paint. I'd save the cam for later too.

I like the Edelbrock Air-Gap. It's a great intake and it's reasonably priced.

Stealth, Performer RPM or Air-Gap. There's no other manifolds worth using in the mild-medium range, unless you can get ahold of one of the vintage high risers for under $50 maybe. The Edelbrock Performer is not worth looking at, most SBFs, even in factory form, seem to be well suited to the Stealth/RPM/Air-Gap.

To answer the cam question we need to know gear ratio, manual or auto (and what stall speed if auto). But shooting from the hip I'd say go with the stock cam and 1.7 rockers with the stock heads or perhaps a TFS Stage 1, which would probably be pretty well suited to the 165s as well.

Don't forget to swap that distributor gear before you install it in that roller motor.
Oh, and I think you are going to need a conversion balancer that will marry the old pulleys to the motor.

+1 on the Edelbrock AirGap or Stealth... these can grow with your motor as you build it up...

thanks for the great responses! I have the distributor gear and 50 oz balancer ready to go. I plan on T5 with 3.73 gears in an 8.8 rearend with trac lok.

Im thinking of just a cam that will give more of a muscle car sound. Will be doing the holley 600 or 650.

My next question about the intake is do any of you know if the stealth, air gap, or performer RPM will fit with a stock hood of a 67 mercury cougar or mustang? I really dont want to hack my hood up. from what I can tell, I should be fine, but engine is not installed in car so now real way of measuring.

Thanks again for the help!

With an AirGap, you will need a very thin carb spacer, and a drop air cleaner....it will be very close as airgap is tall... you might have problem...

I'm putting a late model 302 in my 65'. I went with the stock cam and an edelbrock performer 289 with hi-po manifolds. I'm looking for a stock appearance which is why I picked that intake.

I have a '94 5.0L stock shortblock and T-5 trans in my '67 fastback. AFR 165 heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, Edelbrock 600 cfm square bore carb. JBA shorty headers. No hood clearance issues. Excellent performance and driveability.

not to hi-jack but this will pertain to the author as well. masergt what air cleaner and base are you using and what engine hood. I have an edelbrock rpm intake, edelbrock carb and a 1" spacer and there is no way my stock hood can close with the air cleaner I have. I am trying to figure this out currently

I have a stock 1967 hood (turn signal). The air cleaner is a Hipo style 14" chrome round unit. I do have a phenolic spacer (maybe 1/2" thick) between intake and carb as well.

I went with a performer rpm manifold on my 88 based 347 with world windsor junior heads. it has a "b" cam and I had to make an off set base to clear the DUI distributor with the 14 inch element. hood clearance was tight with a 3 inch tall element.
