It's the turnbuckle piece that attaches to the frame rail, and to the engine, to limit movement.

Bucket Lister,
Hello from Parma... before the question can be answered, we need to know what mounts are on your car?? The 65 early 66 style were prone to breakage, in fact early HIPO289 cars used different mounts.. the design was changed in 66 to a style that was used thru 73... if your frame mounts have a large cast piece and an L shaped bracket with a stud thru it... you have the early style... if you have the later style mounts, then I would not worry, in fact you can purchase Lakewood Musclecar Motor Mounts for the later style which are much stronger than factory if you have concern...

OK, yes, I have one of those. I call it by a different name, so, "torque link" sounded a lot more aggressive. I use a turnbuckle bolted to the head. I leave it a little loose to avoid vibration. Do you get any vibration?

FWIW: I'd stay away from poly mounts if the car is a nice DD. Since the mounts are hard poly, they tend to transfer the engine's vibration to the rest of the car. I would recommend running 87-93 Mustang 5.0 'vert mounts. VERY strong units and i have never broken one of them suckers. They are different than 'regular' 5.0 mounts because the mounts are encapsulated steel/rubber mounts. The mounts are somewhere between poly and stock rubber mounts with regards to vibration transfer. Oh, i had a 5.0L w/HCI and the bottle and i never broke either R or L mount. Google search a pic of them and you'll see what i mean. Good luck.

87-93 mustang 5.0L vert mounts? Do they bolt to the stock 1966 289 chassis without modification?

Well, nothing that I noticed. I think my car will vibrate regardless....lol

FWIW, several of my cars have had solid mounts, and I've never really noticed any excessive vibration. I often wonder if the majority of people who advise against solid, or poly mounts, have ever actually had them, or if they just think they're supposed to be bad? Maybe their engines weren't balanced well? I don't know, but solid mounts have never been an issue for me.

I have poly engine and transmission mounts. Engine is zero balance. I had more vibrations a few years ago with rubber engine/trans mounts in my 28oz 351w than I ever have now. In other words, poly is not the issue, it just exacerbates a vibration problem someone already has (whether it's engine/drive train balance, or lean condition causing engine vibration).

I think I'm going to go with the Energy Suspension poly mounts from NPD. They're 1966 mustang specific and they claim to be stronger than stock. That should set my concerns to rest. Thanks VMFers!

BucketLister,

Those mounts only fit the frame brackets put on 66 Mustangs built post December 1965... do you know whether you have the early or late style mounts on your car

Cutting and welding would be required.

Im pretty sure I have the later style mounts. I haven't really looked at them in the last seven years, but they match the drawings in the NPD catalog.

Maybe. I never broke one, but…

The 64-66 (before 11/1/65) K code mount was developed from the Fairlane bracket, which was massively overdone for racing, including off-road racing. It was indestructible, with a massive 1/2" bolt running through it. After 11/1/65, all Mustangs, even the K code, had a new, cheaper mount.

That one, and a similar mount used in all 67's, and all 68-72 convertibles, was replaced in 73 with a massive new mount to meet the new 73 federal regulations.
