Today was the day.... that I saw the bezel get its shiny on! It came out sweet.. I even had the video camera on... but when the process came to an end... I only then realized that I didnt press Record.... DOH!

I did manage a few snapshots... Two day cure and then I can drill the holes...

We decided that since this bezel is near perfect, that an additional mold will be made from this prototype and then we will use that for the production...

Its not really gold color... that was just bad lighting... I would "FREAK" if that was the color....

That's not bad lighting, that's bad color temperature!

man, I'll give you credit, you have really earned it with this project! It looks great. Are you going to adhere the vinyl to an aluminum sheet first, or directly to the bezel?

ok mr technical photographer... LOL... yes indeed. bad color temp!

Not planning on aluminum (also cant find anyone willing to cut them w/o making it their retirement fund) Probably wont need aluminum sheet because the face will not be textured like it was originally... under every original pony bezel one will find black camera case texture.... I eliminated that when I made this model... that was the only reason they had the alumimun... same with the glove box door.

3M told me what to use and how to appl the vinyl so it will not curl or shrink... I can tell you that those cheap bezels that glue vinyl onto that black texture looks and lasts like crap (I had one)... so I'm not going to be sastisfied with anything like that for my own use... let alone a production piece.

At some point, I will go back and create another 6-gauge bezel with the texture for those that don't want wood grain... (unlike some that simply use black undercoating to create that camera case look...) so rather than having aluminum cut, I will just end up with two molds... actually I'll end up with three total as I am going to endevor to make one for the 65 as well so it matches that glove box which is different than the '66's.

It's been a year long project, now in its second year.... but I am "this" close to being able to roll these out.

Subscribed to this thread too - I'd be super, super interested to see you do a camera case version of this! I'd love to have a stock-looking 6-gauge cluster. I've got no idea how you do that kind of texture, but I need to figure out a way to duplicate it for a custom console that I'm building - so if you've got any tips let me know!

Those are the Legacy series (speedhut series would be just fine for most folks) and are a bit more accurate, but do cost a bit more as well.

Legacy gauges cost 6-700 dollars
speedhut series cost around 500 dollars

Luckily, I am an authorized SpeedHut dealer... and will pass much in savings onto those who want to order gauges with the bezel...

Here is my real intent... to know there are 1000's of 6-gauge bezels in vintage Mustangs that look like they actually belong there as if they were factory back in the 60's... long after I've left planet earth....

yah.. I've actually seen your custom console thread, that's quite a neat project.. (ever figure out that emergency brake thing?)...

I've been experimenting with stamping (kinda like concrete stamping) taking the pattern off my camera case glove box.... I have no doubt I will get it... just gonna take time.

if this project gets lost in the multitudes of threads in VMF... you can always like the page on facebook... I would for sure post it there as well...

Update Friday Feb 15, 2013 (now that Mardi Gras is over...)

Here is the bezel I just picked up from the shiny shop

wood grain is just a mock-up... still needs correct wood, black eyebrow painted and turn signals/HB installed.

From this, we will create a new model... and hopefully begin casting in prodction.

The bezel project is coming along well... here all the gauges fit (made specifically for SpeedHut, but others should work).... additionally, using this particular bezel ring allows for easy installation of all FOUR screws on top....

Tomorrow, it goes to get chrome....

Okay... I was going to take the bezel to the chrome shop today, but I've had a lot of PM's for me to make a black camera case bezel... so I tried to duplicate the texture... this is what I've decided to settle on.... it's as close as close gets... for me anyways... what do you think?... obviously it will be the correct satin black and not a gloss black as shown... however, the mold will come off the gloss texture better...

So I will end up with two productions.. one smooth for wood grain and one like this for the camera case texture...

does delay production a bit, but thought it would be better to roll them both out at the same time..
