Can't find backing plates for 10" x 2.5" rear drum upgrade
I've tried salvage yards - none of the local yards still has any 80s full-size Fords on the lot. None of the parts stores or Ford carries the service parts. No luck on eBay or with any of the obsolete Ford parts houses. Still waiting on any responses from junkyard dog.com. Anybody know where you can still find these? What about the Ranger rear drums backing plates? They had 10"x2.5" rear drums with the right bolt pattern, but it's a different part number. Will they fit? It looks like those ran through '97 which may improve my chances with salvage yards. Any input appreciated. I'm just about finished with my front brakes and would rather upgrade the rear drums rather than cleaning up and refurbishing the existing drums if possible.
The 80's full size are the way to go. That's what I have on my '68.
The only other one's that I know are ok are off the Aerostar van.
(seems like I recall the added bonus was that the aerostar plates
take the 169 shoes, which are the same used on the Shelbys)

I have 10"X2.5" 91-94 Ford Explorer/Ranger/Aerostar backing plates on my 65. I bought the shoes/internals from NAPA to fit a 91-94 Aerostar. Its been awhile but i believe I had to modify the plate to axle mounting pattern using a gasket as a template. And I had to punch out the e-brake hole a bit. Thats it.
If you find a drum brake Aerostar Ranger or Explorer your in!
Good luck.
Check with your Ford dealer to see if E5AZ-2211-A and E5AZ-2212-A are still available. These are the mid-'80's Country Squire backing plates, 10" x 2.5"
Luckily, I got a set right here from the "Free" section. Just had to pay shipping!

Yeah, CA has them for $175 apiece, and Jim wants $600 for the pair (yike!). At those prices I'd spend more on rear drums than I did to convert to front discs - may as well do a disc conversion. I'm looking to try and keep the backing plates to around $50 - $100 for the pair or the upgrade doesn't make sense vs discs - thus the desire for salvage or service parts. Looks like I need to check out Ranger parts since they're a good deal newer than the full-size cars, improving my chances at scrap yards and for service parts.

yeah, the $600 price tag from Jim is steep. But the backing plates he is selling are exact NOS or restored items, with every dimple & date code in place. Perfect if you were looking to complete a 100 point concours correct car. Not just some piece from the 1980's that would be perfectly functional, but not acceptable to the concours crowd.
Upgraded rear drums vs. rear discs: In a light car such as the Mustang, which also has a substantial front weight bias, rear discs are overkill, and even on a race car, serve little purpose. A set of 10 x 2.5" rear drums with some Porterfield shoes will give you all the braking power needed.

Z.
I agree on both counts.
