Default Need 1969 Sportroof VIN technical knowledge

Hello to all of you, I am new here, so I hope i'm in the correct forum. I recently picked up a '69 Sportroof Mustang not far from home at a price between $9,999 and $10,001. Was a road racing project that a guy lost interest in, but lots of work has been done. 9R01L158421 is the VIN above the dash and stamped under both front fenders. ON my title, the VIN is 9R02L158421. I have a correct Marti report with that number, AND another report showing that 9R01L158421 doesn't exist, according to Marti. Very rare from what I am hearing. Previous owner has done some research and explained all of this to me. I dont mind, whatever it shows, as a car can become more of what you turn it into rather than what it used to be back in the 60s. The original Silver Jade color (on the Marti Report) is still all over the car inside and out, although mostly colored with ugly reddish-brown primer. The Jade is in the trunk compartment, under the fenders inside the roofline seal area inside the quarter panel extensions, under the hood, so I would never expect that this was a conversion The previous owner was convinced that it was a VIN mistake off the assembly line. Other interested buyers were turned away due to it being a 01 code car that actually has a Sportroof, originally having a L code 250 V6 with auto tranny, but now has a 351W, 4-spd toploader and a 9" Lincoln Versailles rear end with disc brakes all around. Has anyone else come across such a VIN code puzzle such as this? Why the Cupe VIN? I Hope to hear from some of you VIN experts out there...thanks for your time

Mistakes happened on the assembly line too. There are many documented cases of mixups like this. Regardless, the legal VIN is the one that's affixed to the dash.

It's a mis-stamp. These turn up often. The VIN was stamped by people, who are fallible.

A Sportsroof "AKA fast back" would use the "02" body code. A hardtop "AKA Coupe" would use the "01" body code. The "03" would be a convertible. So you have a typo but it really doesn't mean you have a VIN switch. It happened from time to time with these older cars. Enjoy your new ride and post some pics if you can.
