why does (old) rear end lube smell so stinky ? ? ?
no really, why does it smell so bad after only 40 or 50 years ?
Grandma Hattie is twice as old and has more petroleum in her home-brewed arthritis medicine than whats in a quart of 75w-90, yet her odor is a distant 2nd place to old rear end lube on the stinky scale ?
Not sure why but you are correct it does stick. And man it just will not come out of clothes either. I remember when I was 4 or 5, my grandfather always smelled like gear oil...I guess from working on tractors all the time. My grandmother always had this stuff calld pine oil soap. I distinctly remember it due to its rather pungent but much more pleasant odor than gear oil. It was the only thing that would clean his clothes and shop clothes, and it did an excellent job of it.
This past summer I tore down two old 9" rears to prep for my build. As you would expect, I got gear oil all over my pants and shirt. So I thought I would fetch some good ol' pine oil soap...wrong. I went to every old hardware store in town and searched long and hard online to no avail. So my clothes have now been washed several times with Go-Jo and they still stink.
I smelled a little oil; born and raised in Bartlesville Oklahoma, home of Phillips Petroleum Co. Worked on a casing crew during what felt like the coldest winter ever during the 1970's. Yes, fresh out of the ground oil is strong smellin', but not in the same class as used rear end lube. Just my opinion.
Not the same stuff. One of our local old time feed and seed stores has that stuff. The stuff I'm referring too has the consistency of Go-Jo but was somewhat a clear green hue. The owner of the store knew what I was looking for (she was an older lady). Said they stopped making it years ago. Apparently, after decades of use it was considered dangerous to be used in home.
Im not saying the items you posted wouldn't accomplish the same thing as I have never seen or heard of them used. I just know it isn't the same product.
For some reason, regular Go-Jo (Not the orange stuff) is getting harder to find around here. Again, after decades of use I'm sure it is becoming unsafe for us to use.
Can't answer because I like the smell. Then again, I must have wierd taste buds
because, if I need to take it, I like to chew asprin. Hate cigarette smells but like
cigar smell.
I'll ask my shrink, uhh, I forgot, I fired her. Money was short, so it was either give up my classic car habit, or fire the shrink. The ultimate no-brainer.
Crude oil smells very different depending on what type it is and where it comes from.
"Sweet" crude refers to oil that doesn't have any hydrogen sulfide (h2s) in it. If it did have H2S it would be called "sour" oil (smells like rotten eggs, and can kill you) so that natural opposite would be "sweet"
Years ago back when I had my Fastback (which my screen name was after) the toploader died in it. To save time and possible $ I got a good used one from Long Island. Picked it up in a '91 Eagle Talon, put it in the back hatch area. While driving home I start to smell the gear lube and think mans that's bad. I get home and realize the trans tilted over and the PO didn't bolt the cover back on tight. 90W all in the back of the Talon! I tried a bunch of things to get the smell out but nothing worked!! I finally had to buy used rear seats and trunk mat!! Ever since I am real careful when playing with 90w!
Ha ha . So why are you reading it ? You'll never get back the 5 minutes it took to read the topic and type out your response. I'd rather be reading some totally irrelevant threads than be reading the same old repetitive questions that any 4th grader could find in the shop manual.
You need to be in a chat room instead of this forum trying to boost your post count and arguing with everyone. You have a great deal of knowledge and are helpful but you belittle anyone who has a different opinion than yours. Have a great day I'm done.
