Hi I've posted about this before but haven't quite solved the problem. We have a 1967 mustang we recently restored and have had nothing but problems with the engine, it too was rebuilt, but it seems like everything has gone wrong with it. It leaked coolant out of the head so we plugged the hole, it burned oil because it was getting too much on the top end so we put a pipe cleaner in the oiler hole so it would restrict it some, and it has always ran weird and we don't know why. What happens is, at low rpm it runs great, and when you start to get on it it feels like it's gonna go but then it just falls flat on its face and hesitates and bogs and then eventually picks up again. We have done so many things to the carb and can't figure out what's going on. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Has engine been run on an engine or chassis dyno? It gives a computer readout and lets you know if carb is jetted correctly, no guessing. It's what I did with my 390 that was prof rebuilt. You may also look at the carb squirters. They come in diff sizes and give engine a bit of fuel when you come off idle to accelerate.
No we have not had it on a dyno, not really something we can afford, and yeah we did a lot of adjustments on the accelerator pump and the jets but it just seems to kind of move the problem. And it has a edelbrock 750cfm.
Understood. I forget dyno not cheap for everyone. Here in NH, Our club is friends with an owner of a chassis dyno and does engine tuning on the side. Twice a year he invites club members to do 3 pulls on his dyno for $50. Any tuning extra.
But keep in mind that if folks do enough guessing on swapping out parts and not fix problem, that's $$$ that could have been spent doing things right the 1st time by letting proper equipment help you troubleshoot a problem.
Have you pulled a sparkplug to see how it is running air/fuel wise. I ran an edelbrock 750 for a while and out of the box the metering rods and jetting was very lean. It may need fattening up a bit to get it to run right.
over this weekend we put on it a 650 cfm Edelbrock carb on it, did some timing adjustments, and it almost completely got rid of the hesitation, just barely noticeable, but it still doesn't feel like we are getting all of the power out of the engine. So the 750 must have been too big for it? any recommendations on what carb we should buy if this sounds like it's the problem?
