I think he is talking about the early motor mounts having a left and right not the difference between early and late. I'm sorry I don't know how to tell the difference. I usually just struggle with them until I get it right.
Unless you can find LH and RH stamped on them somewhere, they are offset so they will only drop onto the engine mount brackets one way. If you look at the brackets and then compare those to the engine mounts you should be able to figure out which mount fits into which bracket before you try and drop the engine in.
when I put the motor back into my early 65, I had the mounts bolted to wrong side of the motor and the motor and trans still slid in easy as pie, it was only when the trans would not mount up that I figured out something wasn't right and that I would switch the sides, once swapped everything bolted in perfectly. as far as knowing which side is which, I have no idea?
