My car was missing the manual choke knob, cable and was not connected to my carb. I think I found the hole where the cable goes through the firewall and want to know by the pictures I took if this correct. I located the hole in the firewall just under the main wire harness connector approx 4-1/2 to 5 inches down from the harness. See the picture and let me know if this is correct?
Can anyone send me pictures of where the OEM choke is mounted and mounting points in the engine bay so when I add the manual choke cable to my car I can have an idea of the how it is suppose to be mounted. I would greatly appreciate anyone's help with this. Thanks FB65
I'm out of town or I'd snap a photo or two of the bracket/knob under the dash.
It's most of the way left. The hole for the fastener is already there.
Under the hood there isn't anything the cable attaches to other than the carb.
Whether it's the Holley or the 4100 1.12, the cable housing is held by a bracket
on the carb and the cable core attaches to carb's choke arm.
Thanks for the pictures. Do you have or does anyone here know if there are any clips or clamps needed in the engine bay that route it to the carb before its screws to the side of the carb?
Hi GT289, if you can when you get back can you take some pictures as you mentioned of the choke bracket/knob as it is under the dash and the route of it leading up to the carb coming out of the firewall. I would greatly appreciate this if you can do me the favor. Thanks FB65.
Soonest I can do that is this Friday.
Fastener at the knob is unique/specific. I don't think it's
reproduced..... if that's an important detail to you.
I stole mine off a '65 GT-350 that had been rolled.
It's a pretty close copy. It doesn't come with the before-mentioned screw & nut though.....
One of the more important details is the diameter of the cable core, which is right on
the money on that repo.
A thin wire doesn't work well and is easy to spot.
If I were doing this job I'd go to the hardware store and find a rubber grommet that fits tightly on the choke cable housing. Then I'd drill the hole to whichever size the grommet needs so that it "locks" into the hole.
This may be a little off topic but this question has me wondering how many Mustangs came with a choke cable and not an automatic choke.
The only one I know of is the K code.
Are there other Mustangs that came from the factory with manual choke?
AFA factory built cars...........Boss 302, Boss 429 too.
The 302 Tunnel Port was set to receive a manual choke to meet homologation requirements.
I haven't seen any choke cables on the few race sedans that do exist, however.
So let me ask this question? According to my data code my car originally came with 2bb carb on my 289 engine with a four speed manual transmission. So if my car doesn't have a manual choke nor has the choke cable hole been drilled out for a choke cable. Then what type of carb originally came on my car? Was it an electric choke or thermal heat choke?
All 65-73 Mustangs used a thermal (hot tube) choke, except a few that had manual chokes. This would be the 289HP and the BOSS.
Your car had an Autolite 2100 2V carb, which BTW was one of the best 2V carbs ever. Extremely simple, very reliable, and the annular discharge provided exceptional economy and performance.
They are available secondhand, remanufactured, etc. I prefer the 4100 4V version myself, gives better power and economy, but requires replacement of the intake manifold.
I currently have the stock 289 engine and stock intake manifold with a Holley 4010 4bb carb. Since I don't have a manual or electric choke on my car, where does the thermal choke hook up to? Does anyone have pictures of the connections on a thermo choke to the engine
You should be able to install any Holley 4150/4160 choke on your 4010. That was the whole point of the 4010, that it would have the good features of the Autolite 4100, but use accessories from the 4160.
If you can fabricate a bracket this generic $6.99 choke cable from Jegs is much smoother in operation (cable smoothness both pulling and pushing) than the $69 HiPo reproduction.
Yup. That's a 390 big block C1AE-AH 1.12, before the swap
to Autolite jets, with 289hp primary and secondary boosters.
Took it off a Galaxie in the junkyard in the 70's.
