Took the car out for a spin last night and coolant started pouring out of the heater box onto the passenger side carpet. I have new hoses and the clamps around the hoses seem tight with no leaks.
I'm assuming that the heater core sprung a leak but it seemed fairly new so I didn't replace it when I was refurbishing the box.
Is this common? Is there a way to test it without an air compressor?
I wonder if the new water pump was too much for it.
To the general question "Can I test it.....?" yes you can. Rent or borrow a radiator pressure testing kit from your local auto parts store and with the hand pump pressure test the entire cooling system including the heater core, though in your case it is extremely likely that your core is leaking.
Besides getting a high quality replacement, consider that sometimes high engine revs have been known to "blow" a failing/weak heater core.
I have had terrible luck with the aluminum heater cores. When you go to replace yours I would definitely recommend the brass one. It costs more but is well worth it.
Advice taken. Summit Racing can get parts to Seattle in 24 hours so it should arrive today and I'll send back the aluminum core.
