Continuing to make progress. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. Just trying to find time to get to this a little bit at a time...
Cleaned up the old alternator and power steering pump. Painted the alternator (oh well - couldn't get the case the way I wanted it to look - will probably replace the alternator at some point). Power steering pump looks good with fresh semi-gloss black. Those are both ready to go back on now.
Installed the hose from the inner fender to the fuel pump. Put on the new fuel pump to carb line I bought - the bends aren't quite right and gets too close to the distributor - trying to decide if I want to go with the old one (cleaned up) instead.
Hope to get the carb on next - and old solenoid back on - then start on the wiring (new engine to gauge feed harness - old headlight harness).
I may take the carb with me to my July 4 picnic - I know some car guys will be there who can help me to make sure I have the choke set properly.
I have new heater hose on the way - and parts to refresh the heater (core, seals/foam kit).

Okay. Got the alternator and power steering pump back on. Installed new bypass hose. Put fan spacer and fan back on. Carb isn't attached yet, but have it sitting on the spacer on the engine. Cleaned up old solenoid and put it back on and started to route the old harness back around the compartment.
Latest pic
Next items - mount the carb - and finish wiring. Heater hoses and parts are on the way.

What do you think? Given that I hardly ever lifted a wrench before, I am kinda proud...I just hope it will start....
Wow.. I'm blown away by what you accomplished with the engine left in the car the entire time. It looks great!
I couldn't even imagine going through the pain you went through. You could have had the engine out and on a stand in an hour and yet you chose to take the path less traveled and for that I commend you. It kind of reminds me of those girls that can take their bra off without taking off their shirts.

Well it has been a little while now since I got it running again. Still no leaks from the engine - but the tranny (C4) does leak and that will probably be my next project. The car still needs a good tuneup but I have been able to drive it around the neighborhood - and it's fine for short drives. Thanks to all who helped me along on the engine compartment saga. I learned so much - and feel good about the results.

I miss working on the car. It's sitting in the cold garage. Given the recent interest in Before and After, I just felt like I had to bump this up. Ah the memories...
