Decode this vin please

Not sure what I've got here. Best I can tell the vin # is 5R07A257390. I tried a couple of vin decoders but the R doesn't work. It might be a B.

Thanks yarb

Got my 66 back from a repaint Saturday. Got to put it back together again. I really like the Silver Blue Metallic. Will post some picks when I get her back together/

1966 Mustang Convertible, 289 cid, 4 spd.

Look for another vin stamping, but wouldn't it most likely be an "F"?

Wouldn't it be a 1965 San Jose Built Hardtop (or otherwise known as a coupe) Mustang with a 249 4V? The R represents the San Jose California assembly plant.

A 289 4V, not 249. I typed that wrong and my edit time expired.

Here is what I come up with when I search your VIN
5 R 07 A 257390
5=1965
R= Made in San Jose CA Plant
07=Hardtop
A=V8 289 CID 4V
257390=Production Sequence

What does the Data Plate Information say? That is the plate on the inside driver side door jam, gives you Body, color, trim, date, and D.S.O information. You will get more information on your car from those codes.

Ummm, pay a little more attention. The OP stated, and I quote; "I tried a couple of vin decoders and the R doesn't work". The next most likely would be an F then, right?
Of course it would, and that's why I suggested it.

5R07A257390

5 - 1965

R - San Jose, California Assembly Plant

07 - 2 door Hardtop

A - 289 4-Barrel carburetor

257390 - Sequential Unit Number (Started at 100001) ...so its' the 157,390th car ordered in that sequence.

Hope this helps you a bit. If you give us the rest of the Driver's door dataplate info, We can tell you even more about the car.

I paid quite a bit of attention, maybe you should do the same? Some VIN decoders that aren’t mustang specific or old car specific won’t work or spit out the correct information like newer cars because they don’t have enough characters in the VIN. So... it will most likely give you an error message or something similar when trying to put in a mustang or old car VIN. Any vintage mustang decoding website, book or so on should give you the correct information though.

That is of course that you take into consideration that the weird San Jose plant at some point decided to skip about 30,000 vin numbers or something for some bizarre reason at some point. I think it was when they went from '64.5 production to '65 production.. I don't have the numbers handy.. but that's what happened..

You may need to tighten up a bit...

I guess some people here simply don't understand some things and won't ever learn. Newer cars, those from 1981 and newer, have 17 digit VIN codes on them, whereas the mustang VIN code is typically 11. So......... it's not going to work on a non vintage mustang/vintage car specific VIN decoder. I'm not sure what other way to explain this....... I guess I could take pictures of the sites with error codes and saying something to the effect of "VIN needs to be 17 characters." But you'd still probably not believe me.

Here's a couple pictures of new vehicle VIN decoding websites that require 17 characters for the VIN as opposed to the classic VIN decoding website, last picture, which does not.
