Finding the proper lower clutch rod for my conversion.

I'm converting my 65 6 cylinder from an auto to a T-5 and have the question about what lower clutch rod to use. he z-bar has a 3/8 inch dia. stud for the lower rod but in the catalogs all the lower rods have a large D shaped hole. Is there a bushing for this? I just don't see one that would work with my z-bars' stud.

I'd use this one. If it won't fit over the stud on the Z-bar just use a rat tail file to round out that flat spot.

Sorry but the link doesn't work. BTW it's not that the hole in the rod end is too small it's that all the rod ends look too large and are D shaped.

The D shaped "to big" hole is how the rod was designed by Ford. Works perfect on the round Z-bar stud, no bushing needed. My best guess it that it's designed like that to minimize friction.

The spring mounted to the end of the fork should keep everything tight.

The spring shown in this pic keep the linkage tight and the throw out bearing away from the pressure plate when nobody push the pedal. I believe Ford also mounted a springy wave-washer were the rod mounts to the z-bar stud to keep things tight.

I made my own linkage with rod ends. For the lower a 3/8" female rod end with a piece of 3/8" thread all rod.

Nice work Huskinhano, unfortunately I don't have the tools or the skills to fabricate something like that.

I'm using the adjustable rod suggested above, with a washer and cotter pin it seems like it will work. I have a spring mounted from a hole in the z-bar to the throw out arm that holds it together and prevents the lower rod from dropping down away from the throw out arm. Now I'm looking for an attachment for a spring to pull the throw out arm off the bearing when at rest.

Do your z-bar also have a hole below the were the rod from the pedal mounts? I believe later cars had a spring mounted there, to a bracket on the firewall. The early cars had it all done with 1 long spring, mounted between the fork and the spring tower. The spring were hooked into two small holes in the tower, above were the lower control arm mounts. That's the spring shown on the pic I posted.

Mines an early 65. Yeah I found the spring holes on the shock tower today. It's coming together.

Tools needed. Tape measure, marker, hacksaw, file and a basic cheap tap & die set from HF, you'll need the 3/8x16 die to make the upper rod. For the lower, hacksaw and file.

This is a great DIY project. Looks impressive and very easy to make. Don't be afraid or think you can't do something. We're all far more capable then we think. You just have to try, that's the hard part.
