Question Power steeling slack

Morning

Stock 66 2DHT. The power steering has about 2" of play on the steering wheel. The fluid is at the proper level and the system does not leak and performs great. Would this be considered normal for a system this old or should I look at having it rebuilt this winter. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Depends upon the definition of steering "play."

Check out your system to see where the play is.....

Keep in mind you don't have a steering shaft coupler on a '66.

BE SAFE ! !
1) make sure tire pressure is 32 or more and equal
2) try it with engine off and later with engine running, have a friend move the steering wheel from side to side at the limits of the play & look to see the steering shaft is turning a corresponding amount at the bottom of the column tube just before the steering box, look for movement under the steering box at the pitman arm, and at each piece and connecting point under the car.
3) remember wheel bearings impact how the car responds to steering movements, too.

Myfirst66car: wheel bearing never crossed my mine.
GT289: so to tight up the play at the steering box, I should screw down/in the steering screw. First loosen bolt holding screw in place than tight screw 1/4 turn?

Is this a all original, never been tampered with, system? Yes, including the steering box- Is it original, not rebuilt?

NEVER mess with the steering box while it's in the car. Any adjustments to that screw need to be done on a workbench with the box connected to nothing. You can leave the arm on the box. Much easier to disconnect it from the linkage than it is from the box, and you'll need it on there to center it before re-installing... at least, that's how I did mine.

69 Convertible, 351W, T5, E-Brock Performer 351-W intake, Performer Plus cam, Holley 4160, power assist, dual exhaust, 4-wheel manual drums.

CHOCK Yes, i believe it is all original and never tampered with.

FrankieThe69Kid I helped a friend last year and he just loosen the nut while holding the screw in place and then tighten the screw about 1/2 turn and when tighten the nut. He stated this helped the vehicle's steering.

Just be very careful--VERY careful. When folks shoot in the dark, using no gauge--IN the car adjusting, the risk of overtightening is high. If your box is bound by improper adjusting, this can result in reciprocating ball be ejected into the case.
ONE ball out of the tunnels can land in between the rack and sector, lock up the box. If going around a curve at 60 you will hit the next thing in your path---Tree, semi, child, you will have no choice.
