LED Headlights - Anybody tried the GE Nighthawk LEDs?

I've been swapping out lights in my car with LEDs where they make sense, tail lights, backup lights, dome light. So far I'm happy with the results.

Looking at headlights now. My son just put some GE Nighthawk LED headlights in his 69 Camaro. He says they are awesome and they are better than the headlights on his 2018 Raptor.

They are pricey and have quite a different look. Anybody installed these in their car? Looks like one of the cars in the promo photo is a mustang but since it's shown with the lights on, can't see what it looks like with the lights off.

I really don't like the headlights with a color of 5600K. For me, those are way too blue. Look at the kelvin scale below, I would not want any light over 4000K. Notice an OEM Halogen bulb is shown to be 3200K.

They are very expensive but I love them and they provide a nice white light that's way better than stock. I used them with the relay mod for the headlights so they get full power.

I'd love to run led headlights but I hate the way they look when off.

When I was looking to upgrade the headlights in my wife’s stock looking 66 I kept going back and forth between standard H4 lenses/housings and the new fangled LED assemblies. What made up my mind was when I saw an old Mustang with the new assembly... and it just looked weird. If your Mustang is heavily modified in the looks department then it might look ok, but if it’s fairly stock it might stand out too much in a negative way.

I ended up on installing Hella H4 conversion lenses with H4 LED bulbs and the light output is wonderful while still retaining the stock look.

Have no doubt that those GE LED’s will have tremendous light output and spread compared to stock bulbs, it’s now a matter of how it’s gonna look. Maybe take a pic of your Mustang from straight on and post it, and if you can’t photoshop the new bulb in there then somebody here most definitely can. The GE’s do look better than the multi projector style LED’s, but only you can decide if they look good on your vehicle... despite what the majority of people here will tell you 😉

If you want to keep a classic look but want awesome LEDs look at the Oracle LED kit. I got mine from Autoworksrestomod.com and they replaced the H4 bulb in my Tri-bar headlights. I'm not a fan of the halo headlights on classics so I loved this option. It is pricey though at $180 for the pair but worth it in my opinion.

All in it cost around $110. Donít get cheap housings, the light pattern is terrible, and avoid bulbs with fans, itís just another point of failure.

Looks like the Hella H4 is not DOT approved for U.S. road use. However, there are Hella HB2 that are approved. I think I'll give those a try.

When I Googled GE Nighthawk it came up with halogen, not LED head lights. Halogen take more power than the standard head lights, and considerably more than LEDs. As far as I'm concerned the power savings is the only reason to switch to LEDs. Am I missing something here?. And no I don't like the look either.

It's good to mention that, especially due to the power demand, when switching to H4 halogen lights it is really advisable to add relays to power the headlights. Once you do that, the dimmer switch and original wiring only powers the relay. I don't know if switching from sealed beam to LED directly would still benefit the same by adding relays to the light circuit.


I have H4 headlights with relays and I find my headlights fully illuminate the roads at night. With the relays in place, I see no benefit to switching to LEDs plus I don't like the kind of light produced by LEDs that I have seen as much as I like the light produced by the halogens. YMMV

GE makes both halogen and LED Nighthawk.

From what I've read, all the classics except the 69 take 7" Par-56 (that's the package size). The 69 takes 5.75" Par-46.
The original Par-56 was number 6012. A popular replacement at the time was 6014 for more output. The halogen replacement is H6024.
I ran across a test a hot-rodder did in his garage. It doesn't seem to be too accurate- rounded off to the nearest .25A, and all were tested at 14v (as though charging):
6012 low 2A 28w
6012 high 3A 42w
6014 low 3A 42w
6014 high 3.5A 49w
H6024 low 1.75A 24.5w
H6024 high 4.0A 56w
All of this may not sound too exciting, but if you have a 69 the total amps is around 15 on high instead of 6-8 for the other cars, and that can eat a light switch. Do yourself a favor a go with relays.

Not cheap at $250 a pair IIRC but I am pleased. The one on the right.
