I was checking with the seller of a dual master cylinder with power brake brake conversion kit on installation requirements.
This is his reply. Sound OK? 65 coupe 289 BTW.

It does not come with a distribution block, but you can use the stock unit by plugging the port that runs to the rear brakes; since the rear brakes will now be plumbed directly into the MC.
For a drum/drum application you will need two 10lb residual pressure check valves, available from Summit, Jegs, or most racing parts companies, they run about $20 each.

Are these check valves needed for a non power conversion? What are they for?

Well are you adapting a drum/drum car? Sounds like the MC you are looking at is similar to the JMC unit. You need the 10lb. valves for drums and the 2lbs. for discs.

Ok, this is just my own personal opinion but anytime you go restricting or externally biasing what comes out of the master cylinder thats where a lot of the trouble comes in. Just about anything can be made to work but some times the new brakes won't stop any better or even as well as the old ones did. Excessive pedal pressure is a common result of having to restrict too much. A sinking mushy pedal is caused by the MC not throwing enough brake fluid volume for the type of brakes you have.

Always get the correct master cylinder for the correct application(drum-drum, disc-drum or disc-disc).
