What a huge difference in sound. Definitely quieter than my flows 40 series, but still sounds awesome with the turn downs under my rear end. Sounds good as well when hitting the gas. Thanks for the feedback on these mufflers people!
I've been reading a lot of good reviews about those mufflers. I've always been a big fan of the way flowmasters sound and have been tempted to buy flows until I started reading about the dynomaxs. Do they have that "fuzzy" sound to them? I know that's a weird way to describe a sound but a lot of fiberglass packed mufflers to me have that "sound". All the sound clips I've heard sound pretty good!
It's got a nice smooth idle. But like everyone says, when you kick it up to over 2 rpms, the sound comes through. It has a deep sound to it, but not really fuzzy.
Some things are popular because they are trendy. Somethings are popular because they are awesome. Much like a steak dinner, super turbos are popular because they are awesome.
I have the dynamax vt's on my '66 5.0 HO/EFI and they sound nice and rumbly at low rpm's but really wake up at WOT! The VT's have the valve that opens when you kick the throttle hard.
Turbo design mufflers have been around for a long time. The turbo gets it's name from the car it was developed for, the 1962 turbosupercharged Corvair Spyder.
I had a 1986 GT back in the early 90's - was the first in my area to install Long Tube headers on it... and when everyone and their grandmother was installing Flowmasters, I installed Dynomax Super Turbos.... At WOT, the sound was absolutely incredible!!!!
Everyone always wanted to know the exhaust set up after hearing the car... I'd definitely install DST's again and recommend them, they sound great and glad to see some folks stray from the "sheeple" and go with something different.
I too would also like to get some sound bytes for the DST. I have my Magnaflows for a little over a year and some days, it sounds loud at low RPM and other days, it's quiet. Prefer something a little quieter since I drive it a few days a week.
That's what I have on my '66. Not only sound decent but are pretty well made. Just a note about turn-downs that don't exit at the rear.... because of low-pressure that forms in the passenger compartment there is a likelihood that if there is ANY sort of hole or opening into the passenger compartment that CO can be drawn inside. This isn't so much of an issue in the Summer with the windows down, but in Spring and Fall when the temps are cool and the windows are up it can be dangerous.
Windows up or down in California, it's already dangerous with sky filled CO. Doesn't matter what season it is. We always think it's going to rain just by looking in the sky. LoL
Hey guys, I have a 331 roller block stroker with some hooker long tubes that I inherited with the car. They feed a 2.5" h piped exhaust with super turbos exiting through a GT rear valance. So here is my question. Is there anyone out there that wouldn't mind if they were just a touch quieter? I still feel like my car is pretty loud. I have even thought of putting some small resonators downstream closer to the tips.
Old thread revival. My 66 has 2.25 inch exhaust with H-pipe exiting through GT valance and Hedman shorties. Had Flowmaster 40's when I bought it. They sounded great except for the miserable 2000 rpm drone. I put on a set of Flowmaster Flow FX which are supposed to be quieter and relatively drone-free. No change. So after reading all the glowing reviews I installed Dynomax Super Turbos and now I'm wondering what all the praise is based on. I still have the drone. I installed sound deadener in the doors and trunk, and under the back seat. The exhaust work was done by a reputable shop. Is the noise level really comfortable at 2000 rpm, which in my car is about 62 mph in fifth? Has anyone done resonators? I getting tired of throwing away money on exhaust installations.
I’m glad to hear your review. I recently bought a 2.50” exhaust system from MAC. I didn’t like their mufflers, looked like Flowmaster copies and from reviews, loud. The Dynomax are what I’m planning on getting. Thanks for the feed back!
Factory setups on my old Chryslers always had the tail pipe (from the muffler back) a 1/4" smaller than the rest of the system. I believe it made the system quieter.
Can you tell if the drone is developing more from the rear or more toward the front end of the exhaust system? FWIW, I've never seen a Flow Master that didn't drone at lower RPMs.
I've seen several variations on this and it is supposed to work, but may require some experimentation on the chamber length and size, etc.
essentially is is an exhaust J bend welded into the tail pipe and capped off.
Here's a discussion on another board.

My friend put a polished stainless steel full exhaust system on his 370Z. I was shocked to crawl underneath and see a pair of Helmholtz chambers. I doubt there is room for those on the Mustang though a pair of conventional resonators should fit, if they would cancel the drone. I'm still confused as to how others have no drone with the Super Turbos. My tailpipes protrude two inches from the GT valance. I'm pretty sure the hangers are correct. As far as where the sound is coming from it's hard to localize.
I think next winter's project is going to be to scrap my Flowmasters and install a set like you have. AT WOT, they all sound good. My issue is that the Flowmasters are just too loud for my taste driving around town. Not an issue with the top down really, as the wind noise cuts the drone....but with the top up...way too loud.
Here's a short video of the car at WOT with the flows...have to admit it sounds good there:
For those of you with the Dynomax Mufflers on your ‘65-‘66 cars, what part # did you use? Or what configuration of length of muffler and inlet/outlet location?
