1969 428r- code color change ...

Looking for some input on my 69 428cj...the car came as a silver jade automatic from the factory...I bought it from the son of the deceased original owner. The original owner used the car for drag racing only and was not even tagged until 1991 for the first time. The family told me that he had the car painted raven black in 1970 to give it a more "sinister" appearance. The automatic transmission was removed and replaced with a close ratio top loader at the same time. He kept(and I have) the original transmission,totque converter, exhaust manifolds, shifter and pedals. Whew! I would like some feedback as to whether I should put the car totally back to original(I don't have all of the engine electronics and air pump items) or keep it black(car needs a refresh) ...or any combo of available options...everyone tells me to keep it black with a 4-sp and if I sell it offer the parts with car. Let's hear it.... Whatcha think?!?

Well, that didn't take long. You can take bids with each color.
Id love to see 45 yo silver paint but it seemed to have the shortest life. I would rather it be silver but wouldn't change it till it needed it. Ralley race excuse.
Was the black done well jams and such, fenders off?

When you say "Silver Jade", think "Jade". A VERY popular color for the 69 mach1. A 428 R code C6 car is pretty rare. I usually figure "wrong color" to be a 10-20% hit in sale value, because original color is so easy to verify on these cars. There were no engine electronics, other than the Rev Limiter, and missing Thermactor system will not be a problem unless you or the buyer want to go concours.

If you are selling the car, and the black paint is not trashed, just eat the difference. Changing it back will not be economically sensible, unless, as I said, the black cannot be buffed out. I'd be tempted to swap back in the original drive train and exhaust, and sell the 4-speed stuff separately. Having the OE drivetrain will enhance the value of the car, and the 4-speed stuff would be a pricey sell separately.



The main danger I see is if you put back the original drive train and paint it Silver Jade, you'll want to keep it.

The car is a rust free car from Maryland (since it never saw the street) which to me makes it rare! Lol! The paint on the car is "scarred" up from sitting and being rubbed up against and daily driver door being opened on it for years. The fenders are rough on the tops( I assume from being leaned ove while wrenching). With all of that I actually have it prepped for paint at this time....the jambs and trunk etc... We're done in black. Honestly I didn't realize it was a silver jade car until I got the MARTI report. Since the new paint is inevitable...I need to make the decision... I have actually had the car since 2011 but it has been sitting in my shop until I could figure out which route to go... I've got about 22k tied up in the project so far, with the price of the car and parts I've bought so far...I just don't know how far to go with it...

I found some original paint when I took out the gas tank...and I installed the original wheels they were virtually brand new...

OK, you make a pretty clear case for going with the original color. Silver Jade in BC/CC would be amazing. Probably also a good idea to switch to the OE manifolds and trans, but I would do that before painting. You are exactly right about the tops of the fenders, 69-70 fenders were notorious for that. Your car's history as a racing vehicle pretty much locks that as the cause.

Amateur restorer. Well, sometimes I have been paid for it. But not right now.

There's no rev limiter on a '69 CJ Mustang. That didn't start until the 1970 model year.
